Why Poland have already been knocked out of Euro 2024 after just two games explained

Poland has become the first team to be eliminated from Euro 2024, despite having one match remaining. Their fate was sealed after a controversial refereeing decision during a lackluster 0-0 draw between France and the Netherlands.

In the 69th minute, Xavi Simons’ goal against Didier Deschamps’ side was disallowed for offside. Referee Anthony Taylor, with the help of VAR, ruled that Denzel Dumfries, who was in an offside position, had influenced the play. This decision was made despite Dumfries not attempting to play the ball or obstructing Mike Maignan’s view.

Poland’s hopes of advancing relied on the Netherlands defeating France, but the decision ultimately dashed the dreams of Michal Probierz and his team. Even though Poland still has a group stage match against France on Tuesday, June 25, their chances of progressing are over.

Poland’s earlier 3-1 loss to Austria placed Ronald Koeman’s side at the top of Group D, tied on points with France, who remained second after the draw. Austria is in third place with one point less, while Poland has yet to earn a point with one game left.

Even if Poland wins against France and Ralf Rangnick’s team loses to the Netherlands, allowing Poland to match Austria’s three points, it won’t change their fate. Euro 2024 rules prioritize head-to-head results over points, and Poland’s loss to Austria prevents them from advancing.

Due to their 3-1 defeat to Austria, Poland’s Euro 2024 journey ends prematurely. They can no longer qualify as one of the top two teams, and their unfavorable head-to-head record with Austria seals their elimination. This also marks the end of Robert Lewandowski’s campaign and possibly his tenure with the national team
