Why Manchester United declined chance to sign Jamal Musiala

Manchester United once missed the chance to sign Jamal Musiala, who has now emerged as one of football’s brightest talents.

Musiala, known for his electrifying performances, has been a standout player at Euro 2024, propelling Germany to the quarter-finals with three goals, making him one of the tournament’s joint top-scorers.

His recent goal against Denmark in the Round of 16 set up a thrilling quarter-final clash with Spain.

Currently a key player for Bayern Munich, Musiala was on Manchester United’s radar in 2018.

According to The Athletic, United’s youth scout Andreas Herrmann was impressed by Musiala’s talent during a youth camp.

Additionally, Lyndon Tomlinson, then the assistant head of academy recruitment, was captivated by the 15-year-old’s potential, having seen him play alongside Jude Bellingham for England’s youth teams.

Despite the strong recommendations to sign him, United opted not to pursue Musiala due to uncertainties about which national team he would choose to represent.

Born in Stuttgart and eligible to play for England through his mother, Musiala had played for both Germany and England at youth levels. United deemed the situation too risky and decided against the signing.

The report also highlights how Manchester United missed out on other promising talents, including Moises Caicedo, Pedro Neto, and Benjamin Sesko.

INEOS hopes that the new sporting director, Dan Ashworth, will streamline the club’s recruitment strategy after years of excessive spending.
