Manchester United offer De Ligt five-year contract as negotiation to sign the Bayern Munich defender continues

Manchester United have reportedly offered Matthijs de Ligt a five-year contract as they negotiate to sign the Bayern Munich defender.

United have been linked with the Dutchman for some time, with recent reports indicating that Erik ten Hag is seriously considering bringing him to the Premier League.

De Ligt joined Bayern Munich in a £68 million transfer in 2022 but managed only 16 league starts last season, as Bayern failed to secure the league title for the first time in over a decade.

The former Ajax star is a top defensive target for United this summer, along with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice.

According to Dutch publication De Telegraaf, United have presented terms to De Ligt, and an agreement is expected soon.

Negotiations are ongoing for the 24-year-old Netherlands international, who has three years left on his contract with Bayern.

Ten Hag, who took over at Ajax in 2018, made De Ligt the club’s youngest-ever captain, leading them to win both the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup in the 2018-19 season.

Reports suggest that Ten Hag has had several phone conversations with De Ligt as the transfer nears completion.

If the deal goes through, De Ligt would join former Ajax teammates Antony, Donny van de Beek, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, and Andre Onana at Old Trafford.

Despite the significant investment required for De Ligt, United’s pursuit of the former Juventus defender is not expected to impact their interest in Branthwaite.

United are preparing a second bid for the Everton defender after their initial £43 million offer was rejected, with Everton seeking closer to £70 million for the 21-year-old after his breakout season.

United are determined to bolster their defensive options following an injury crisis at the end of last season, which left the team vulnerable.

Casemiro has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after receiving criticism for filling in at centre-back during the final weeks of the campaign.

Additionally, Raphael Varane has left the club, as United decided not to offer the 31-year-old a new contract. He is now close to joining Serie A newcomers Como.
