Lookman wins Atalanta’s Player of the Season Award

Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has been named Atalanta’s player for the second consecutive season following his tremendous impact on their success in the just-concluded 2023/24 campaign, Newspremises reports.

The club made the announcement on their official X(formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, June 25.

“Your Player of The Season 2023/24 is once again Ademola. Lookman (translated from Italian),” the club posted.

“Look who won the Italian Optic #POTS again.”

Lookman secured the club’s first European title and their second major piece of silverware in their 117-year history by scoring a stunning hat-trick as Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the Europa League final in May.

The Nigerian also wrote the biggest piece of history as the first player to score a hat-trick in the final of the competition.

The 26-year-old ended the season with 16 goals plus nine assists in all competitions.

He joined Atalanta in the summer of 2022 for a fee in the region of €15m after unsuccessful spells in the Premier League, where he featured for Everton, Fulham and Leicester City.

He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Everton on January 5, 2017, for an undisclosed fee, reported as an initial £7.5m, potentially rising to £11m with add-ons.

He played 36 matches for the Toffees across three seasons, scoring just one goal plus two assists before he was sold to Leipzig for €18m.

At Leipzig, he returned to the Premier League on loan with Fulham in 2020. There he scored four goals and four assists in 34 appearances. The following season, he was at Leicester on another loan spell, where he scored six goals in 26 appearances.
