Euro 2024: John Terry hits out at BBC for ‘disgraceful’ Cristiano Ronaldo coverage

Former England skipper, John Terry has allegedly slammed the BBC for their coverage of Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty miss in Portugal’s narrow penalty shootout victory over Slovenia, calling it a “disgrace,” Newspremises reports.

On Monday night, Portugal advanced to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals after a penalty shootout victory following a 0-0 draw with Slovenia.

During the round of 16 match, Cristiano Ronaldo had his penalty saved by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak in extra time, leaving him in tears. However, he composed himself and successfully scored in the shootout, helping his team secure the win.

The BBC’s analysis of Oblak’s save featured the caption “Misstiano Penaldo,” which drew sharp criticism from John Terry. Terry expressed his disapproval on Instagram, calling the BBC’s caption “a disgrace.”

Terry’s empathy for Ronaldo stems from his own experience of missing a crucial penalty in the 2008 Champions League final. Coincidentally, Ronaldo also missed a penalty in that shootout, but his team, Manchester United, ultimately defeated Terry’s Chelsea.

Portugal’s hero in the match was goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who saved three penalties in the shootout, stopping attempts from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec, and Benjamin Verbic, as reported by ESPN.

Despite being the all-time leading scorer in the competition, Ronaldo has yet to score his first goal in the tournament in Germany. This Euro marks his final appearance, and he hopes to finish on a high note.

Portugal will face a tough opponent in Friday’s quarter-final, as their upcoming rivals defeated Belgium 1-0 in the earlier game on Monday, July 1, 2024.

Second-half substitute Randal Kolo-Muani forced Jan Vertonghen into scoring an own goal with five minutes remaining, according to Sky Sports.
